I figured the appropriate song to start this new section would be the very first song I ever had recorded. It was 1983 and I was nineteen and still new to California. I had met David Foster a few months before and he sort of took me under his wing and let me hang out on sessions he was doing, and occasionally have me sing background vocals. Mainly, my job description was to keep hot coffee coming and tell David how great he was. I was happy to do both.

One day, David asked me over to his house in Toluca Lake where he was writing a new song with a brilliant orchestral arranger named Jeremy Lubbock. Jeremy had done the arrangements on “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” and “Love Me Tomorrow” which David had produced for the band, Chicago. David’s success as a record producer was really in its early stages at this point, but he’d had many hits as a writer and musician.

So there we were in David’s basement music room, and Jeremy started playing this gorgeous melody on the electric piano. I chimed in on a few melodic lines, and David suggested a change or two, but the music is mostly Jeremy’s. We loved the tune, and because it was a typically lovely, sunny afternoon, we decided to head out on David’s boat to see if we could figure out a lyrical idea. Somewhere out there on the Pacific, Jeremy and I sat down and started writing the words and by the time we docked back in Marina Del Rey, “The Best of Me” was done.

David was doing his first solo album, all instrumentals, for a Japanese record label. He loved this song so much, however, that he thought he’d try cutting it and singing it, as well. Now, don’t get me wrong….David is one of the most talented people I’ve ever known…..but as a singer,…..well, as a singer, he’s a great pianist. You know?

His first attempt at a vocal on this song was pretty brutal, and he nearly gave up on it. But then he called his friend, the legendary Maurice White, lead singer of Earth, Wind and Fire, who came to the studio and produced a vocal that was immensely better. The song not only made this little indie Japanese album, it became the title track.

Through the years, this song has been recorded by Kenny Rogers, Phil Perry, Barry Manilow, and others. David and Olivia Newton-John did a duet of it that resulted in a top 20 Adult Contemporary hit in the 80s, and Cliff Richard had a #1 record with it in the UK. More recently, Michael Buble has been performing it in concert, although I’m not sure if he’ll ever record and release it.

To this day, it’s a song I’m extremely proud to have my name on as a co-writer. Speaking of which, when David’s Japanese album was released, I was obviously pretty psyched to finally see my name on an actual record. I got the album in the mail, opened up the credits, and there it was: “Written by D. Foster, J. Lubbock and P. Mark.”

I swear to God.

Enjoy. Many more to come your way.

RM

by Michael McDermott
Richard Marx, a man nominated for 3 Grammy awards and 1 American Music Award finds no more satisfying reward in life than headlining Sunday’s Celebrity Concert for Charity.
Marx debuted over 20 years ago with his hit single “Don’t Mean Nothing” from his self-titled album and has since gone on to sell over 30 million albums and write thirteen #1 songs. Marx continues to remain a respected pop and adult contemporary artist in the music industry.

On Sunday, August 15th at 6:30PM, Marx will be appearing at the Fraze Pavilion in Kettering on behalf of the 13th Annual Celebrity Concert for Charity. The charity benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as well as the Children’s Medical Center. Marx is no ‘first-timer’ to donating his time or talents to charity. Back in 1987 he donated the royalties of his 1987 hit single “Should’ve Known Better” to build a room at the NYU Medical Center where pediatric cancer patients can play while at the hospital. Marx first aligned himself with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation back in 2000 and has raised more than $3 million for the Foundation.

Don’t miss your chance to see Marx at this year’s Celebrity Concert for Charity at The Fraze Pavilion on Sunday, August 15th at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now.
You can Charge-by-Phone at 937-228-2323 or order tickets from Ticketmaster at http://ticketmaster.com

Vernon Hills received a surprise Friday night when a Grammy Award-winning singer made a last-minute decision to visit and entertain with some pals at the village’s annual festival.

North Shore resident Richard Marx joined headliner Vertical Horizon on the main stage at Vernon Hills Summer Celebration. Marx was not on the official Summer Celebration entertainment schedule.

Vernon Hills Village Manager Mike Allison said word about Marx’s intention to jump on the Summer Celebration stage for a few songs came late Friday afternoon from event organizers.

He said Marx knows Vertical Horizon members.

“He’s just playing with some friends,” Allison said.

At least 4,000 patrons were expected at Friday night’s Vernon Hills Summer Celebration at Century Park, just north of Route 60 and Lakeview Parkway.

Marx snagged a Grammy in 2004 for the song “Dance with My Father,” which he cowrote with Luther Vandross. He’s best known for “Endless Summer Nights,” “Right Here Waiting” and “Now and Forever.”

Summer Celebration’s featured act today will be The Smithereens at 9 p.m. The event’s finale will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Just sat in with Ringo at Radio City in NYC. It’s his 70th birthday so I wouldn’t have missed it.
I sang backup on “With A Little Help From My Friends” along with Billy Squier and Colin Hay and many others. That’s always the last song of every show.

But not tonight.

The lights stayed down a few more minutes…the band took the stage…and ….Paul McCartney walked out. They did “Birthday” and it was like it was 1966 all over again.

None of us there will ever forget it.

Holy shit….
